Anna Brice Cockland’s paintings are situated in the space between abstraction and figurative. There is a pull not actually of polar opposites but more the tension between, the act of painting becoming a predominantly intuitive process.
Whether they are reminiscent of an outer landscape or a more internal dialogue there is an investigative approach. Remembered spaces and natural phenomena lead decisions of shape and line. The handling of materials, use of pigments, oil paint and collage build an ambiguous narrative.
The palpable energy in the work is reflective of multifaceted critical mediations, a seeking out toward balance and personal creative truth.
Anna BC’s work features in prestigious collections, including Clerical & Medical & The Financial Times as well as private collections in the U.K., France, Australia & U.S.A.. Her artist’s book “From A to B and back again, dialogues overheard” can be found in the British library and she gained support from the British Arts Council for “Flow”, a public installation and personal project.
Other installation work in Warrior Square Station, St. Leonards and in private collections indicate a strong attachment to text and low art materials. These are used to document, witness and record our passage with hope at this art’s core.
After many years with a long but distance relationship with Scotland, Anna has finally relocated and started a new body of work at her studio in Naast. The land, one’s bodily response to the actuality of being subject to its weather, strength and spell, the subject.
